Field Report = This is a minor airfield but full details can be found in the Bottlang Airfield Manual. It's near Lugo in the top left corner of the map of Spain. It may be part of Sunny Spain, but the chances are that to get to it or leave it you'll need to cross the Cantabrian mountains to the north which go up to7,000 feet in parts. These and the north coastal area just beyond them play host to some pretty antisocial weather. We flew in from La Morgal (cf. for report of the near disaster which ensued). Apparently in winter the temperature drops to minus 20 dgrees centigrade. As we landed, a heavily laden Air Tractor roared past on a firefighting mission: summer was obviously well established here. It seemed like paradise after the last few claggy days, and we hosed the aircraft and ourselves down before retiring to the little Mexican restaurant next to the swimming pool. Years ago it must have been a military field, and it has a 1,200 metre hard runway. We camped under some trees in what used to be a sort of picnic area near some disused buildings. There were toilet facilities and hot showers by the pool. The landing fee, if there was one, was minimal, and they have fuel. |
