I've dropped in to Carcassonne a number of times as a fuel stop on the way to the South of France. It used to virtually close for two hours at lunchtime, and of course that was always when I wanted to fuel and depart!

Flying home from Majorca last week, I diverted into Carcassonne due to thunderstorm activity, and stayed overnight for the first time- the place made such an impression, I am going back in a couple of weeks.

We stayed in the Hotel Clarine, about 150m from the walled city. The hotel was OK, but it's proximity to the city made it a good choice.

The airport now has scheduled flights with Ryanair flying to Stansted twice a day. There is major activity at the time of a flight, but it immediately returns to its sleepy self as soon as the flight has gone. Most of the staff then go home!

Well worth a visit.
