Rouen (Vallée de Seine)   LFOP

Date of Visit = Various

Pilot: = Keith Jillings

e-mail = amen@earthling.net

Brand new terminal building, with an excellent restaurant, on a vintage French airfield. Recently renamed from Rouen (Boos). The old hangar still has "BOOS" painted on its roof to help identify the field.

Easy to find VFR - many distinguishing landmarks (the river Seine circles almost completely round the old town). VOR ROU 5.8nm from the threshold of runway 22, and ILS with DME, so easy to find in IFR too.

There is a very steep escarpment about 2nm from the threshold of runway 04 - beware of up- and downdraughts.

Rouen is a fascinating historical town, worth several days' visit. The stake where Joan of Arc was burned by the English is preserved in the old market (vieux marché), adjacent to a brand new Church built to look like the helmet from Joan's suit of armour. This replaces the original church destroyed during WW2. The "neck" of the helmet is a covered market selling fish, cheese, and other French delicacies.
